I took this photo of visiting filmmaker, Arthur Pratt, Survivors (2018), speaking to the Visual Anthropology class in the Cornerstone Media Labs at Colorado College.

This was taken with a Canon 60D DSLR, 18-135mm kit lens, and edited in Photoshop. See Pratt’s film at pbs.org/pov/survivors.

My goal was to get his face and gestures while not capturing faces of students, only the instructor. The production light in the foreground hints at the discussion topic but knowing my target audience allowed for a wider shot showing the interaction as a great academic opportunity.

I published the photo in black and white to simplify the cultural differences between an African filmmaker telling the tragic story of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and the multi-ethnic student body of an expensive private American college.
